Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. As you say, switching the microgear has no effect on this over-sensitivity.
It would be better if you could change them once on one computer and the buttons then function like that on all computers. It works very well with my Macbook Pro, and I agree with other reviewers about the comfort of the grip and the smoothness of the scroll wheel. I also have an MX and experienced the same issue in my win7 setup.

Chrome, LibreOffice, Reaper etc. There is a setting for ‘smooth’ scrolling in there.
